Amidst the reality of this pandemic, what are your expectations right now? Does Christian faith have any influence on those expectations?
For Christians all around the world, Easter is a time of remembrance and celebration, an occasion of fresh hope. Perhaps for many this time last year, they expected to be worshipping with others in person this Easter or at least sitting in a cafe together or visiting family. True for some around the world this Easter but not for others. An expectation not fulfilled. Of course there are those in countries like Myanmar where even an expectation of basic freedoms right now seems to be far from reality (If you believe in praying why not take some moments to pray for that country?)
When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a donkey just before Passover all those centuries ago, perhaps many had high expectations. A belief that he was the coming King, the One who would right all injustice and sort out the Romans as the occupying force, once and for all. They were to be disappointed. Though arguably Roman imperial power is long gone but the message of Christ’s kingdom is still changing lives today.
Jesus’ disciples were to have their hopes seemingly smashed as they saw the One they followed arrested, scourged and brutally killed through crucifixion. Expectations, hopes, dreams of a new beginning shattered. Or so it appeared. Yet Sunday was coming…
Words from Matthew’s account –
“Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he is risen, just as he said” (Matthew 28:5-6 New International Version)
How do we respond to such words? Does the central core of Christianity – Christ’s death and resurrection seem real? relevant? a nonsense? Does the story of Easter have anything to speak into our lives now in 2021 amidst this pandemic? Not just into our expectations but the whole way we view life?
